REVIEW: MINISFORUM DeskMini X35G con Intel Core i3-1005G1 a 10nm

MINISFORUM DeskMini X35G It is a brand new mini PC MINISFORUM of which today we present your analysis or review. A computer of very small dimensions and with a careful design where its metallic finishes stand out. This computer surprises us by integrating a processor Intel Core i3-1005G1 made in 10nm, a step that seemed impossible. Inside this small box we also have multiple connectivity options, we can install a disk M.2 NVMe, a M.2 HOURS and other 2.5 ″ disk that we can mount internally. It also has Wi-Fi 6 with a new chip from Intel, allows three video outputs simultaneous and has a port Thunderboltt 3 hasta 40 Gbps. Let’s see how this first mini PC with a processor behaves Intel  Ice Lake de 10nm in our usual review.

Video unboxing

Below you can a Unboxing video where we describe the main characteristics and their performance. You have more videos in our YOUTUBE CHANNEL where we always hang our latest news.

The mini PC MINISFORUM X35G has a sober design and compactIt has ventilation grilles on one side and air outlet on the other hand. On the front we have a status led on the power button, integrated microphone, reset button, two USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A ports, port USB Type-C Thunderboltt 3 40Gbps charging, data and video output. On the sides we have a headphone output and a microSD card reader. In the back area we have the rest of the connectors where they stand out, dos Ethernet Gigabit, video output HDMI 2.0 [email protected] and another DP 1.4 [email protected], we can connect up to two screens at the same time.

On the motherboard of this mini PC we find the latest generation adapter Wi-Fi 6 + BT 5.1 (Intel AX200NGW) with two internal antennas. When opening we see the removable plastic support for a disc 2.5 hours SATA, in the back we find the disk M.2 2280 NVMe Kingston installed and on the opposite side another slot M.2 2242 SATA free. This mini PC has support SPROUT.

  • Networks: Wi-Fi 6 + BT 5.1 (Intel AX200NGW) with two internal antennas / 1 Gigabit Ethernet port.
  • Expansions: We can change the NVMe 2280 disk, mount an M.2 SATA 2242 disk and another SATA 2.5 ″ disk.
  • Extras: VESA support included / 2x HDMI cables.

To cool the whole we have in the upper part a blower fan with copper plate in contact with the main processor. The hot air outlet is carried out on the side, so it is recommended not to block that air outlet, on one of the sides the system takes cold air, otherwise it does not have many more air inlets.

Environment and user experience

We started the MINISFORUM X35G pressing the front button of the box and we see that as the specifications indicate we have Windows 10 Pro 64bit correctly activated and with all its drivers installed by default. The environment moves very smoothly thanks to its powerful CPU in combination with 8 GB of RAM that allow us to load a large number of navigation tabs or editing projects. A valid computer for office automation, multimedia, games of all kinds up to 1080p resolutions and editing programs at a good level.

  • Test system version: Windows 10 Pro 64bit.

  • Medium: MINISFORUM has its own website and contact email to send our inquiries.
  • BIOS: Access by pressing ESC / Classic AMI BIOS key in text mode.
  • Switched on: Remote power on from Ethernet / Auto power on connection / RTC scheduled power on.
  • Other systems: Compatible with Ubuntu / FreeELEC Compatible for PC.

Network, storage, RAM and ports

In the section of network adapters in the mini PC MINISFORUM X35G we have a wireless chip Wi-Fi 6 + BT 5.1 (Intel AX200NGW) integrated and a port Ethernet Gigabit. We passed storage speed tests NVMe installed as standard and we observe that it behaves normally reaching its maximum speed. The adapter Wi-Fi 6 gives us very good results and we have high performance using our Xiaomi Redmi AX5 router.

We put the 16 GB de RAM DDR4 3200 MHz which comes standard in configuration Dual Channel, the speed is good, in the AIDA data it shows us wrong information, in the BIOS if it looks good. Port USB-Type C Thunderbolt 3 allows us connections until 40Gbps, supports electric charge and video output.

Processor, performance and thermals

On the mini PC MINISFORUM X35G we have a processor installed Intel Core i3-1005G1 With two physical cores and four threads, the processing speed is between the 1.2 and 3.4 GHz, consumption is 15W TDP and is manufactured in 10nm. In the graphic section we have a GPU Intel UHD Graphics GT2 10gen with a speed between 300 and 900 MHz, the performance. Overall performance is basic for desktop use and is on the same level as the Intel HD Graphics 620 GPU on Intel 8gen processors.

  • If you want to know some of the compared models You can read their detailed reviews in this link.

As we see in the performance tests of the MINISFORUM X35G this is at the level of an AMD Athlon 200GE, a processor for the entry range and light use. In the graphic aspect, the performance is much lower than any AMD Vega GPU, until we have the new Intel Xe GPUs the competition will not exist in this aspect.

Regarding the thermal section the system stays at a very good temperature in normal desktop use and the fan system is not annoying, 10nm they are quite efficient. If we start playing demanding titles, we do have an increase in temperature but we do not reach much less worrying highs.

  • Consumption: Off 1.1W / Sleep 12W / Basic use 20W / Maximum 38W.
  • Thermal: Standby 47ºC / Basic use 56ºC / Maximum 81ºC / CPU 3.4 GHz max. / Maintains performance up to 100%.
  • Performance in games: Fortnite 68ºC / CPU 3.2 GHz average.
  • Noise: 32dBA Min – 48dBA Max / Quite quiet in general.
  • Fans: CANNOT be adjusted in BIOS.

We run our tests on games in the MINISFORUM X35G and his GPU Intel UHD Graphics 920 GT2 10gen It gives us a fairly limited performance when playing demanding titles where it is far from the efficiency of the Vega GPUs integrated in the AMD APUs. As we can see from the results, it is possible to play some demanding games only at 720p and the emulators they are also doable, but at most we stick with a few simple Wii titles.

  • Adjustment: High quality / 1080p resolution / No VSync./ PUBG Lite configuration guide.
  • On models with integrated low-end Intel HD GPU and 720p resolution.

Performance test in Fortnite, low quality settings and 100% rendering with 1080p and 720p resolution. It is only minimally playable in 720p with 100% rendering and low settings. It is better to focus on other games or if we are interested in this aspect go directly to a mini PC with AMD APU with Vega GPU.

Playback test

In the video playback section, the mini PC MINISFORUM X35G has the GPU Intel UHD Graphics 920 GT2 10gen which has one VPU which has hardware support for codecs HVEC Y VP9. In this processor we have support for video to 10bit color and we also have HDR compatibility, we have not found a problem to activate it directly with our monitor. Performance with advanced video formats can vary between code and Windows serial player, KODI is usually better.
